Bundu Country Lodge - Nelspruit / WhiteRiver
Saturday morning early after sunrise, we set out on foot into this local small game reserve, curious to see what the day will hold in for us. Although it was late in the season, we were not disappointed with the array of local spider species e.g. Lycosidae, Cyclosa sp, Araneus apricus, Cheiracanthium and Palystes. The day had its fair share of excitement with a great number of scorpion finds (Cheloctonus jonesii). Digging out these beauties in the hot lowveld sun was hard work, but we were rewarded with very aggressive, pinching specimens. As usual the outing was a great success.
The Crocodile Gorge is a perfect location for the study of all kinds of spiders, insects, snakes and animals alike. Setting out on foot into this beautiful gorge early Saturday morning, we had no idea how the day would progress, for the walk/climb is about 6km long, and drops more than 400m into the gorge. However, we were rewarded with large populations of Tetragnata sp, Salticidae and numerous other spider species. We also spotted a Red Roman, and a beautiful black button spider. About halfway into the walk we were lucky enough to encounter a twig snake in one of the shrubs, and paused for a while to rest and also take some photographs of the snake. Although this was only a scouting session to find a proper survey route, and not an actual spider survey, we were quite impressed with our finds for the day. We will definately be going back to the gorge soon for the actual survey!
